DungeonStory Status...

Posted by DuskSpirit - December 10th, 2010

Hey, all. This is just a quick update on DungeonStory, my new flash project.

I got some pretty good critiques on Ep. 1-1 even within a couple hours of uploading it. I'm really appreciative to all of you guys who gave me that feedback. I am trying hard to make sure that there is some actual CONTENT in my next submission. Thank you for letting me know what you would like to see.

As for Ep. 1-2, I am having a bit of a problem with it that maybe you can help me with...

I was noticing something about the first installment that was a more than a little annoying to me. I have no clue why I didn't pick it up when I was making it, (maybe I was too excited to get it posted?), but I noticed it now, so... The problem is the dialogue. It's too fast, no? I wouldn't doubt that some of you had trouble reading it and had to replay the movie to get it all. (Well, you'd had to have refreshed the page, as I was retarded and didn't put in a "REPLAY" button.) So, in the next episode, which I am working on now, I want to make it so that you have to click the dialogue bubble to advance the scene. However, when I put in the ActionScript code to make the movie stop at the frame with the dialogue, then resume when you click, I get an error:

"Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference."

It then refers to frame 347 as the frame where the problem exists. However, there's nothing wrong with frame 347. Nothing starts or ends in that frame. Frame 345 has the actions in it, then 346 is where the object that the code relates to, (the dialogue movie clip that you have to click to resume playback), is no longer present. So wouldn't the problem lie in frame 346?

The answer to that is "no," apparently. I extended the length of time that the movie clip is present so that it is present in frame 347, just to see if it was the lack of that movie clip that was causing the error. It still popped up.

So, for right now, I'm kinda stuck. I'm not big on the technical stuff regarding Flash CS5, so please excuse me for not trying something that would be obvious to someone who has used it a lot. (Like I said in my first submission's summary, I'm very new to CS5, and Flash, in general.) If you can help me, I would very much appreciate it.

On a slightly related note, I am itching to do something with one of the characters in Ep. 1-2 that is giving me problems, as well. This is NOT a high priority, as it's purely aesthetics. I want to make a character do a backflip while using Motion Tweening to make him move to certain spot on the stage. All I really need to know is how to make a symbol rotate for one full, 360 degree turn while also following a Motion Tween path. Like I said, this is not crucial, so if it's not an easy answer, (for your or me), then don't bother yourself too much.

Well, that's it for now. I'll update ya'll with anything that seems important!

Keep livin'.
